CBS producer willing to sign confidentiality doc on Letterman blackmail
The CBS producer accused of trying to blackmail David Letterman for $2 million had told the comedian’s lawyers that he would sign a confidentiality agreement after he was paid up, a Manhattan court has heard.
But Robert J. “Joe” Halderman, 52, was being secretly taped as he gave his verbal terms. Prosecutors in court papers allege he said he would keep copies of details about Letterman’s private life for his own protection.
“The issue is your client does not want this information public,” Halderman said in the taped conversation, according to prosecutors.
He added: “I have said, for a price, I will sign a confidentiality agreement and I will not make this information public. That’s, that’s the deal,” they alleged.
In demanding $2 million not to reveal office sexual liaisons Letterman later publicly acknowledged, Halderman said he needed money to visit his son across the country.
Halderman, who seeks dismissal of a charge of grand larceny charge, has used the defence that he was just shopping a screenplay. A decision on dismissal of charges is expected next month.
