Horror novelist Stephen King has boosted morale for US troops by giving $13,000 to help the soldiers get home for Christmas.

The 62-year-old American writer and his wife are helping 150 service families spend Christmas Day together by donating the generous sum.

The large amount of money will pay for two bus trips so 150 of the Maine Army National Guard soldiers can travel from Camp Atterbury in Indiana to Maine for the holiday.

However King reportedly thought that the number 13 was too unlucky so gave $12,999 instead and one of his assistants, Julie Eugley, gave the other $1!
