Clint Eastwood’s new movie has been beaten at the US box office by a cartoon starring a princess and a frog.

Invictus stars Morgan Freeman as former South African president Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as rugby player Francois Pienaar.

The movie, directed by Eastwood, is based on the true story of how Mandela helped heal his apartheid-torn land through the white bastion of rugby and the sport’s 1995 world cup.

But the movie took just $9.1 million in its opening weekend, good enough for only third place.

The top spot went to the Disney cartoon The Princess and The Frog, which grossed an impressive $25 million.

In second place was Sandra Bullock’s The Blind Side, also based on a true story of how a family take in a homeless boy who goes on to become a huge NFL star.

The movie took $15.5 million, making its three-week gross $149.8 million.
