Ryan Reynolds says that it takes ‘balls’ to be happy: “Enormous, sweaty, swinging cojones.”
The 32-year-old actor and husband of Scarlett Johansson, says: “In order to be happy, you have to be willing to be disliked.
“In order to respect yourself you have to be unafraid to disappoint others. You have to make tough decisions. That takes balls.
“The people who have made the greatest impressions on me in my life take care of themselves and don’t always look for the most pleasing answer in any given moment.
“Happiness, like so many things, is a choice.”
The actor made his comments in an interview with Best Life and shared other pearls of wisdom with the men’s magazine including his eating habits and fitness routine.
He explains what he had to do to prepare for his latest film – X Men Origins: Wolverine, saying: “When I did Wolverine, I had to spend countless hours in a gym and countless more hours stuffing my face with freshly de-feathered chicken.
“I don’t do that normally. I need to move. I hike, I run a little bit.
“I also want to have the use of my body when I’m 70. My dad is the one who taught me that, only because I’ve learned from his mistakes.
“He didn’t take good care of himself when he was younger. He’s really paying the price for it now that he’s older.”
Reynolds also pays attention to what he puts in his mouth.
He says: “If I don’t eat every three hours, I turn into a serial killer. I get low blood sugar so I’ve always been a six-meals-a-day kind of person.
“I just don’t eat a lot – small portions all day. I feel better eating like that.”
The actor admits that his healthy attitude to life is a lesson he learned the hard way, adding: “I’ve spent time in my life trying to drink myself to death, smoke myself to death, and all these other things that I thought would alleviate something in the short-term.
“But what I’ve really learned in my 32 years, if I may be so bold, is that you need to moderate, have a bit of this, have a bit of that.
“You need time alone and time together, time with work and time with family, you need all these things to lead a life that’s satisfying.
“Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables serves as a great metaphor for life.”
