After spending $180 million dollars to bring talking polar bears to life, The Golden Compass didn’t exactly make the headway expected for an opening weekend. While it did end up as the number one seen film, it only grossed about $26.1 million. The fantasy film was expected to join the ranks of Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Harry Potter. However, seems as if being based on a bestselling series of books is about the only thing they have in common.
Opening on Friday, The Golden Compass had already endured weeks of poor reviews and criticisms. The film was under a boycott urged by a conservative Catholic group because of the author (Philip Pullman) and his supposed anti-God beliefs.
Looks like Nicole Kidman let the Compass lead her in the wrong direction - straight to a box office flop.
